While Longview is more or less a new city, its history is rich and fascinating. Just 73 years ago, the 37 square miles we know today as the city of Longview, was just seemingly endless stretches of green wilderness, dotted with only a few rural farmhouses. The first residents of the area, Harry and Rebecca Jane Huntington, appeared in the mid 1800’s, staking their claim on a peaceful spot along the Cowlitz river. The Huntington’s named the spot after Thomas Jefferson’s home in Virginia, “Monticello.” Soon after Monticello was established, people from all over the northwest gathered there to draft a memorial to Congress, a which led to their being granted statehood under the name of Washington, in honor of America’s first president. In 1923, developer R.A. Long and a team of nationally-renowned planners and landscape architects created Longview, a name giving credit to the developer as well as the area’s gorgeous setting. Every detail of the planning process was focused on keeping with the integrity of the city’s natural, economical and societal foundations. Today 35,000 residents and hundreds of annual visitors agree that the mission was accomplished. The well-designed layout of the city’s 20 neighborhoods, parks and downtown district, in addition to Longview’s quiet, welcoming quality, flourishing economy and commitment to excellence in education makes this community an ideal place to live, work and play.
